The inevitable. Why? For many of us, Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva is the gateway in the world of rum.
Origin: Venezuela
Alcohol content: 40% v/v
Aging time: 12 years
Sugar content (Alko, Systembolaget): 18-35 g/l (33 g/l according to the manufacturer - https://nutrition.brown-forman.com/de-de/diplomatico)
Color: mahogany
Nose: sour cherry jam, honey cookies, slightly woody, chocolate, sour cherry compote, zserbó cake (it is a Hungarian cake, with walnuts and apricot jam, and chocolate coating), sour cherry pie, sweet tobacco. Quite complex, hard to grasp. Towards the end if I try to warm the glass a bit with my hand: apple, peach, which then turns into sweet syrupy
Palate: chocolate, Swedish biscuit, light sour cherry at the end, long chewed bakery good (not salty and not sweet), wood , a few minutes after the sip sandalwood flavor, apple and very light citrus at the very end
Aftertaste: long, flavors come out even minutes after the sip
The aroma of the glass when empty: cola, cheap sweet chewing gum, paper, herbs (mostly chamomile)

My glass delighted me with a very complex aroma. It has everything here, mostly sweet things. When tasting, the alcohol quickly evaporates at the beginning, followed by the flavors. The spiciness at the start is gradually taken over by sweetness in both on the nose and palate. The flavors associated with the aromas also return, but what surprised and made me nostalgic was the sandalwood flavor. Obviously, I never licked it, but when I was a child, we had a small sandalwood statue, it had a smell like this flavor. So, you get the idea, right? Although it contains sugar, I don't find it to be overwhelmingly sweet. There are much sweeter rums. I would have to taste it unsweetened to find out what the sugar highlights or masks. It pleases me with pleasant flavors on the exhale and after the sip. This is a rich, complex rum that I think anyone who is getting to know this world can taste. If someone hasn't tried any rum yet, usually I treat them with this.
(The brand is owned by Brown-Forman Beverages, just like Jack Daniel's and Chambord.)
