Today is World Rum Day and this is already the 6th time. Why it falls on the second Saturday of July every year and what the purpose of it is, is still unclear to me. Also, the goal is very understandable and fine (raise rum among the other recognized and respected spirits – but it’s already there in my opinion -, enjoy our favorite drink, if possible in company with friends – if I understand correctly this is the reason according to the organizers: https://www.world-rum- day.com), but why shouldn’t every day be rum day?
Since I wasn’t at home today, I had to hunt for something to drink to celebrate (and I don’t keep rum with me at all times). In Csopak, where we are on vacation, I had to look for the festive rum a bit: there is no pub/bar; the grocery store had all other alcohol but rum; but I finally found one of the many buffets/restaurants on the beach, and the selection was surprisingly wide (you can get around 8 kind of rums on a Balaton beach!).
I ended up choosing Kraken Black Spiced for several reasons. I’ve tasted more than one available item, and although it seems logical to celebrate with a well-known spirit, I definitely wanted something new. Furthermore, it was at the right price so that I didn’t feel that more time was needed for the tasting and that the rum deserved more attention. The conditions were not very ideal (it couldn’t be said that the conditions were pleasant: highest level of heat warning since days, insane degree of crowd at the beach on Saturday, and I didn’t even have time to analyze the rum at length). The price of 4 cl was approx. as much as the 5 cl small bottle, so it was a pretty good buy, and the more expensive brands (which I haven’t tasted yet) were 30%-315% more expensive (it’s still 4 cl). I haven’t even drunk spiced rum before, which was also a compelling argument. And finally, the most important: I missed out the Kraken until now, so it’s about time.
Kraken Black Spiced is a rather pleasant, coffee-vanilla flavor, really spicy, sweet rum. It also smells nice. I wouldn’t want to analyze it any longer (the lake and my family were waiting – poor people!), but I’ll definitely write a little more about it sometime later, if I can taste it again.
I recommend you too, even if you are not a frequent rum drinker, pour yourself some now and enjoy the time! Up spirits!
